Just when you thought we write about nothing but visceral fat, we’re introducing a new series of posts.

A few times a month we want to share with you three things that we find interesting, inspiring, helpful, thought-provoking, nourishing or beautiful.

Books are one of my cornerstones of a happy life. I love to read them, think and talk about them, and share them. So it’s no surprise that I’m kicking off this “three things” series with three books, all nonfiction, all in repeat rotation in my reading life.

A happy book on raising happy children

raising happinessIf happiness is a kind of muscle built through behaviors and habits, what better time than childhood to start exercising it? Christine Carter, PhD, a sociologist at the Greater Good Science Center, offers not just key principles but concrete strategies to make them happen. One of my favorite parenting books.

A provocative book on re-thinking work

Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hannson, founders of 37 Signals, question much of the conventional wisdom around business growth, productivity and entrepreneurship — the latter an outdated term, they note. Highly readable, it’s a look at the new reality of work that’s likely to challenge some of your assumptions.

A beautiful book on gathering yourself up and going on

wildThis account of Cheryl Strayed’s months on the Pacific Crest Trail following her mother’s death from lung cancer is harrowing, heartbreaking and utterly compelling. I did relate to her loss, but putting that aside, I think I can objectively say this is a gorgeous book, with some of the best writing I’ve seen in years: fine, pure and indelible.

Have you read any of these? I’d love to hear your thoughts and (of course!) your suggestions of books that kept you reading late into the night. Share with us below!
